The Shneor Cheshin Memorial Scholarship
At its annual meeting, held January, 2012 in New York, the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation board welcomed camp alumnus Yoel Cheshin.
Cheshin traveled to New York from Israel, on behalf of his family, to present to the board his proposal for a perpetual scholarship in the memory of Yoel’s brother, former camper and counselor Shneor Cheshin. Shneor was killed after being struck by a car, while riding his bike in Israel, in 2010.
”Our family wants to give (an annual scholarship) to a camper that reflected Shneor’s characteristics, but also someone who has financial needs,” said Yoel. “Shneor passed at the age of 42 and, at his funeral, there were thousands of people. He was last at camp 27 years ago. But camp meant so much to him and it really changed his life.”
The annual scholarship will be awarded to a full-season (7-week) returning camper, who has demonstrated, in the past, the characteristics applied to this particular scholarship award. (see below)
Jack Swan, past president of the board, mentioned that Shnoer was proof of just how camp can welcome people from different nations and differing personalities, saying "Camp is the great equalizer; everybody is accepted!"
